RSC Font

The Royal Society of Chemistry font is a specialist chemistry font that may be downloaded free and used on PCs and Macs. This font allows chemical symbols to be introduced easily into Word documents.

How to install

With the latest versions of Mac OS and Windows OS, double click on the zip file to open it, and double click the font file to install it.

Instructions for PCs

  1. Save the file in the font folder of the computer, which should be in the Windows folder. If this folder isn't there, try using the "Find" option from the Start menu and search for "fonts".
  2. Open a document or file, select the Insert menu and then Symbol. Scroll down the menu to find the chemical font that has been installed and select the particular symbol required.
You will then need save the specialist font within the file or document so that it is available when it is opened on a computer that does not have the font installed:
    1. Open the Save As dialogue box in the File menu, and find either general options or save options in the Tools dropdown menu.
    2. A new Save dialogue box opens and a number of useful options become available.
Clicking the Embed True Type fonts option saves the whole font with the document.
This enables a second box called Embed characters in use only. This option keeps the amount of information saved with a document to a minimum and is a sensible choice if only a few characters are used
